There is little professional disagreement regarding the prevalence and consequently the need for clinical treatment of tinnitus. Current estimates in the U.S. indicate that more than 50 million individuals live daily with an internal head noise in the absence of any sound source – a medical condition known as tinnitus. The challenge of tinnitus lies in the treatment modalities. A review of most common practices indicates the vast majority of clinics that offer a tinnitus treatment program only include the use of amplification with masking capabilities along with limited tinnitus counseling. Whereas this treatment plan can help some of the patients complaining of tinnitus, it leaves a significant number of patients searching for additional answers for their personal head noise.

A Clinical-Based Solution
We believe that the use of a device alone is often not sufficient. Personal interaction with a knowledgeable clinician is critical to altering and correcting the perception of bothersome and debilitating tinnitus.

For those clinics that choose not to adopt an in-house program, a solution exists that allows the clinic to offer comprehensive tinnitus therapy without additional staffing or clinical expense. Tinnitus Network, a partnership between Fuel Medical and Tinnitus Treatment Solutions (TTS), provides an alternative tinnitus therapy program that is clinically friendly, medically comprehensive, provides strong patient outcomes and is financially beneficial to you. Utilizing tele-medicine protocols, the program moves the therapy sessions outside the clinic, thereby avoiding the time limitations and staffing issues created with an internal program.

With this program clinics will provide in-person care, which includes the diagnosis and medical assessment for underlying conditions and any amplification care for tinnitus patients with hearing loss. TTS audiologists will offer tele-health tinnitus care, such as expert patient education and habituation counseling, and the HaRT™ Clinical Care program with long-term monitoring and follow-up.

In the HaRT Clinical Care Program for tinnitus, expert tinnitus education and information, proper use of sound therapy and routine interaction with a tinnitus expert audiologist are the three key elements of successful treatment. Tinnitus management skills and sound therapy are utilized for short-term relief and retraining and correction of hypermonitoring is utilized for long-term habituation.

This approach is unique. It draws from other well-established, evidence-based tactics while also incorporating the most convenient methods and technologies for the patient.

In today’s medical environment it is important for practices working in the hearing health care arena to provide a comprehensive treatment option for tinnitus patients. A strong tinnitus program allows for interaction with other medical professions, broadens the offering of services to the community and, most importantly, provides a strong outcome for patients suffering from tinnitus.
