The ICD-10 CM 2025 diagnosis codes have been released and became effective October 1, 2024. Below is a brief description of the new codes for nasal valve collapse and social determinants of health (SDOH). Things to consider with the new codes: provider education, update templates in the EMR and review any medical policies that pertain to nasal valve surgery. Payers will most likely have to update their nasal valve surgery policies to recognize the more specific types of nasal valve collapse.
J34.82x Has a code first: underlying cause such as:
deviated nasal septum (J34.2)
J34.8200 Internal nasal valve collapse, unspecified
J34.8201 Internal nasal valve collapse, static
Narrowing of the septum, head of the inferior turbinate and the upper lateral cartilage
J34.8202 Internal nasal valve collapse, dynamic
Collapse or falling of the upper, middle sidewall of the nose on inspiration
J34.8210 External nasal valve collapse, unspecified
J34.8211 External nasal valve collapse, static
Fixed narrowing of the caudal septum, lower lateral cartilage, alar rim and nasal sill
J34.8212 External nasal valve collapse, dynamic
Collapse or falling of the lower sidewall or nostril of the nose on inspiration
In addition, there are two new codes that may be helpful in expressing a patient’s social determinants of health. They are:
Z59.71 – Insufficient health insurance coverage
*Inadequate social insurance
*Insufficient social insurance
*No health insurance coverage
Z59.72 – Insufficient welfare support
*Inadequate welfare support
Please consult your ICD-10 book or coding software to see the complete coding guidelines for the new codes above.
